The Role

We are seeking a strategic and entrepreneurial Alumni Engagement Manager to lead the development of our global alumni area of work. AFS has 500,000 alumni from over 75 years of exchange programs including world leaders and changemakers. We want to engage them in our mission of creating active global citizens and preserving the legacy of AFS for generations to come.

The successful candidate will design and implement a framework that will build a vibrant, digitally-connected global community of active global citizens at a time when the world needs them most.

Key Responsibilities

1. Strategic Development & Framework Design

  • Work with the Deputy Chief of Organization Development to execute a global alumni engagement strategy
  • Define “alumni success” metrics

2. Create and manage the Global AFS Alumni Community 

  • Manage the alumni and archives sections of the afs.org website
  • Work with the AFS digital team to build and manage a global Salesforce database of AFS alumni
  • Manage an alumni LinkedIn page and community, as well as other relevant social media

3. Impact & Storytelling

  • Write, edit and publish a monthly  digital global alumni newsletter; grow and retain an audience for this newsletter
  • Plan, write, and edit an annual print publication for alumni and friends of AFS with support from the communications team and our designer
  • Identify and highlight notable and VIP alumni, as well as  grassroots success stories, for the Communications team  to showcase the impact of AFS on global citizenship
  • Collaborate with the Communications team to produce the annual Alumni Impact Report
  • Manage global surveys and data collection to track alumni career trajectories and social contributions.
  • Leverage the AFS archives to find stories and promote the legacy of AFS through digital and print publications
  • Help interested alumni and friends of AFS  access archival materials with support from team members based in the NYC office.
  • Ensure all communications are engaging, inclusive, globally relevant, and on-brand

4. AFS Network Support & Capacity Building

  • Coach partners on managing local alumni data in Salesforce in order to maintain a clean and up to date global list
  • Provide customer service to alumni who want to create a profile or update their information in our global alumni database
  • Create tools and templates for AFS Partners interested in engaging local alumni

5. Engage alumni through programs and events 

  • Conceive of, plan and execute  regular alumni engagement activities (in-person and virtual) that help alumni benefit from what AFS has to offer
  • In partnership with the CEO and Deputy Chief of Organization Development, conceptualize and plan a global alumni gathering.

Candidate Profile

Requirements: 

  •  Minimum of 3-5  years in alumni relations, alumni community management, or another alumni related field.
  • Proven track record of building and managing digital communities (not just social media groups, but structured engagement platforms).
  • Strong interpersonal, cross-cultural, organizational, writing, and time-management skills.
  • Creative, adaptable, and able to work independently and collaboratively. As this is a developing area of work, you must be comfortable with ambiguity
  • Clear, engaging, and professional communicator in English, with attention to detail. Eligible candidates may be asked to provide samples of previous work in alumni engagement
  • Must be a minimum of 18+ years of age to apply with the ability or work full time and ability to apply for a visa to occasionally travel to the U.S.
  • Stable wifi/internet connection with a video-enabled device. Regular video meetings via Zoom are required (AFS provides access to all platforms)
  • Experience working in a federated or “network” model (working with independent national branches) is highly preferred.
