We are excited to share the latest edition of AFS Janus, a newsletter for AFS Alumni & Friends. This issue shines a spotlight on the heart and soul of the AFS organization: its dedicated volunteers. From its origins in the World Wars to its present-day global presence, AFS has thrived on the passion and commitment of individuals who believe in building bridges across cultures.
The new AFS Janus emphasizes that AFS began as a volunteer-powered organization, shaped by the contributions of the AFS Volunteer Ambulance Drivers during the two World Wars. Today, this legacy of service continues with over 30,000 volunteers worldwide who support exchange students, host families, and schools, and lead workshops and educational activities. These volunteers are described as global changemakers, cultural connectors, and passionate educators who empower young people with global skills and perspectives.
AFS Janus also provides a snapshot of AFS volunteers, drawing data from a bi-annual Volunteer Survey and Evaluation. The survey reveals key insights into the volunteer community, including demographics, motivations, and time commitments. For example, the survey highlights that the relationships and community developed through volunteering are a primary motivator for people to get involved with AFS.
Furthermore, the AFS Archives play a crucial role in preserving the history of AFS volunteers. The newsletter delves into the archives to share stories and images from the organization’s past, honoring the contributions of early volunteers and showcasing the evolution of AFS.
This edition also celebrates outstanding AFS volunteers through the 2024 AFS Volunteer Awards, recognizing individuals and chapters for their exceptional service and commitment to the AFS mission.
The 2025 AFS Janus offers a comprehensive look at the invaluable role of volunteers in the AFS community, both past and present, and encourages continued support for their efforts in fostering intercultural understanding.
