In 2025, Global You programs continue to foster the next generation of Active Global Citizens.

Since its launch in 2020, the AFS Global You Adventurer program has empowered over 1,000 young people from 52 countries to become active global citizens. This versatile program has proven its effectiveness in fostering global competence, as demonstrated by our ongoing research iniatives.

AFS Global You Changemaker, since launching in 2021, has welcomed more than 650 young people from 52 countries, keen to create meaningful change in their communities. The program, developed in partnership with the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Social Impact Strategy, fosters practical knowledge in changemaking along with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to implement positive social impact—a direct through-line to active global citizenship.

Virtual Exchange makes Global Competence accessible to more teenagers:

Global competence is a critical power skill. Global You programs equip teenagers with the basic skills and understanding necessary to thrive in diverse environments.

The success of both programs is a testament to their innovative approach and the dedication of its facilitators and participants. By providing accessible and impactful virtual exchange experiences, both Global You Adventurer and Changemaker continue to empower young people to build bridges across cultures and contribute to a more just and peaceful world in 2025.

Key Highlights from AFS Research:

  • Virtual exchange effectively fosters global competence: Our most recent research has shown that virtual exchange programs have a significant impact on the development of global competence among high-school-aged youth worldwide.
  • Developing crucial global skills: Our studies found that the AFS Global You Adventurer program provides immediate growth in key areas such as cross-cultural communication, empathy, and the ability to withhold judgment. Participants showed a greater understanding of cultural differences and a greater ability to form positive relationships with people from different backgrounds.
