by Daniel Obst, President and CEO, AFS Intercultural Programs
As we approach World Teachers’ Day, I’m reminded of the essential role that educators play not only in imparting knowledge but also in helping young people develop a dependable sense of direction and equipping them with the capacities to care for and contribute to the world. Teachers inspire curiosity, critical thinking, and empathy—essential capacities for active global citizenship. At AFS, we are committed to expanding access to global citizenship education and empowering schools and teachers to develop active global citizens.
Today, I’m excited to announce three new resources and opportunities for educators interested in global citizenship education. These initiatives reflect AFS’s ongoing commitment to supporting schools and teachers in this critical work.
1. Launching 300 Scholarships for Teachers to join the AFS Effect+ for the Classroom Program
For the past five years, with generous support from the Cyril Taylor Charitable Foundation, AFS has been working hand-in-hand with educators through our Effect+ for the Classroom Program, helping teachers bring global citizenship education into their classrooms. This year, we’re offering 300 scholarships for high-school teachers to join this virtual global competence certificate program. The program equips educators with practical tools to foster global competence in their students, engaging them in conversations about sustainable development, intercultural communication, and more.
Applications are now open for the first cohort. I encourage schools to share this unique opportunity with teachers who are passionate about empowering students to take action in their communities and beyond. The deadline for this first round of applications is 13 October, so be sure to apply soon. If this doesn’t align with your schedule, we’re opening a second cohort application window from 9 December 2024 to 12 January 2025.
2. Introducing the AFS Global Classroom Newsletter
Starting in October, we’ll roll out the AFS Global Classroom Newsletter, a semesterly publication dedicated to sharing stories, insights, and practical tools for teachers interested in global citizenship education. Each issue will spotlight educators impacting their classrooms and beyond, offering a space for shared learning and collaboration. If you’re passionate about developing globally engaged students, this is a resource you won’t want to miss—sign up today to ensure you receive the first issue!
3. Presenting the AFS Global Classroom Conversations Podcast
The AFS Global Classroom Conversations podcast will feature in-depth interviews with educators worldwide, exploring what global citizenship education looks like in practice. We’ll be diving into real-world examples of how teachers are helping students understand complex global issues and take meaningful action. Those signed up for the newsletter will be the first to know when new episodes drop.
Why This Matters Now
Global challenges require global solutions, and education is at the heart of that response. Schools and educators are the driving force behind creating informed, compassionate, and active global citizens. By expanding our network and offering these resources, we’re working to ensure that no educator stands alone in this effort.
At AFS, we’re not just offering programs—we’re building a community of educators committed to developing active global citizens, one student at a time. Whether you’re new to global citizenship education or have been teaching it for years, there’s something for everyone in these initiatives.
As we celebrate World Teachers’ Day, let’s use this moment to reflect on the power of education and the vital role that schools and teachers play in shaping our future. I look forward to seeing how you’ll bring these resources into your classrooms and communities. Together, we can continue to inspire and empower the next generation of active global citizens who will make a positive impact on the world we share.
