The AFS Global STEM Innovators: United States is a full-scholarship, 6-week domestic exchange programs for teens interested in exploring STEM, sustainability, and intercultural skills. 

This program provides an exceptional opportunity to build critical intercultural skills and drive sustainability and STEM training that will help students thrive in a global economy. The program brings together diverse groups of students from around the United States for an exciting and enriching experience. 

Innovators scholars begin with a 5-week online curriculum for young leaders, ages 15 – 17, focused on enhancing global competence skills and investigating the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Then, the program culminates with a local in-person workshop in Chicago, focused on sustainable development, STEM technologies, and cultural visits in key markets.

Applications for the 2026 AFS Global STEM Innovators: United States are now closed. Admissions decisions to be announced on May 1 via email.

The Innovators programs are designed to create positive local impact. Applicants should be legal residents of the United States.

  • Virtual Exchange: June 1 – July 2, 2026 (online)
    • Develop your global competence, expand your interpersonal skills, and uncover why global skills matter towards the future of STEM
  • Workshop: July 11 – 17, 2026 (in person) hosted in Chicago, IL
    • Meet with STEM industry leaders and experts, participate in interactive site visits, gain volunteer service experience, and investigate case studies in sustainable energy and technologies
