The Tokyo Tama Chapter of AFS Japan has a rich history of innovation, chapter sustainability, and community impact. Since its founding in 2002, it has consistently evolved to meet the needs of its members and participants. Initially established during a decentralization movement, it was built on the foundation of the former Kanto Chapter, bringing together experienced adult volunteers. Over 22 years, the chapter has hosted 266 participants and sent nearly 500 abroad, demonstrating its enduring commitment to intercultural learning.
In 2011, when AFS Japan was recognized as a public interest-incorporated foundation, Chapter Presidents had to be replaced after five years according to regulations. Many chapters struggled to find a successor to take over this role. During that time, the Tokyo Tama Chapter steadily established a volunteer base by training successors, having multiple chapter vice presidents, and raising volunteer awareness to run quality program activities. Currently, there are 71 registered volunteers in the Tokyo Tama Chapter, and the registration renewal rate is 100%. The chapter accepts the various lifestyles of its volunteers and manages a diverse group of chapter members to ensure that all members are not left out of the membership process.
Their deep connections with local schools have advanced AFS values, enabling schools to take ownership of hosting information sessions and fostering a community-wide appreciation for intercultural education.
The chapter’s impact extends beyond participant hosting and sending. They provide opportunities for local residents to interact with international students, offer training to prevent discriminatory language and behavior, and supporting diverse groups and participants. Their collaborative approach integrates university students and adult volunteers, enriching their programs with diverse perspectives.
By sharing their successful strategies nationwide, including leadership development and inclusive practices, the Tokyo Tama Chapter has contributed significantly to AFS Japan’s overall growth. Volunteers of the Tokyo Tama Chapter humbly say that they just do what it takes to accomplish the AFS mission. However, continuing to do “just” that is steadily leading to a change in the consciousness of the local community, creating active global citizens, and serving as an inspiring model for chapters across Japan.
