Volunteer Roles: National Board Member, Local Chapter President, Sending and Hosting Coordinator

Volunteer Since: 1969

Roberto’s journey with AFS began in 1969 when he participated in an exchange program to the United States. Since returning to Chile, he has dedicated over 40 years to the organization, with all three of his children also participating in AFS programs. Early on, he, along with other former participants, initiated summer camps to support underprivileged communities, blending fun with active global citizenship for a decade.

After the devastating 2010 earthquake in Chile, Roberto’s leadership was pivotal. He organized volunteers to assist in reconstruction efforts and developed camps to aid those in need, showcasing his commitment to social responsibility. As President of the Local Chapter in Temuco, he has significantly increased student placements, making his chapter a leader in the country. His proactive fundraising has established a special scholarship for students, enhancing access to intercultural education.

Roberto believes that opportunities for personal growth should be available to everyone. He consistently motivates his chapter to reach diverse social strata, broadening access to intercultural experiences. His efforts reflect his commitment to making AFS programs accessible to a wider audience.

Roberto’s impact on the AFS community is profound. His dedication has fostered collaboration and inclusivity, inspiring fellow volunteers and chapters to engage in AFS’s mission. He serves as a mentor, promoting skill development and confidence among new volunteers.

His contributions to AFS’s impact goals are tangible. His relentless fundraising for scholarships has expanded access to intercultural education, while his innovative ideas, such as volunteer camps for community assistance, demonstrate his commitment to developing active global citizens.

“Roberto consistently goes above and beyond, serving as a mentor and motivator, promoting the development of new volunteers’ skills and confidence. His commitment to volunteerism and community service exemplifies the values we uphold, making him a deserving candidate for the Galati Award. His contributions have enriched AFS Chile.”—Domingo Barriga, Karem Gutiérrez, Volunteer Managers AFS Chile
