The forint (sign: Ft; code: HUF) is the currency of Hungary. The country is a member of the EU (since 2004), but not a member of the Euro zone yet.

The currency could be volatile against the Euro, and the usual rate is 1 USD= 260 HUF. See the exchange rate here – best to check it before departure.

Debit cards and credit cards are widely accepted. In restaurants, museums, chain shops, or at travel pass counters you can surely pay with credit card.

Regarding the local social etiquette, it is a custom to give 10% tip at restaurants. However, we advise you to check the receipt before paying, because there are some places which automatically add the service fee (10%) to the final sum.

You can drink safely from the tap. Tap water is clean.

Budapest has an efficient, diverse and low-cost network of public transport, including bus, metro, trolley bus, tram, suburban railway lines (called HÉV lines), and boat services. By using any kind of transportation, you can reach your destination quickly and conveniently.

Budapest is a safe city, even at nights. In case of an emergency, you can call these numbers free of charge:

If your passport is lost or stolen you must contact the Directorate of the Office for Immigration and Citizenship at (+36-1) 463-9165 or (+36-1) 463-9181, open 24 hours. Stolen passports must be reported to the police.

Built in beautiful Neo-Gothic style and located on the bank of the Danube. This is the first dedicated Parliament in the world is also the third biggest Parliament (after Romania, and Argentina). It serves as the permanent seat of the National Assembly. The jewels of the Hungarian kings, St Stephen’s Crown or the Hungarian Holy Crown is also displayed here.

Don’t be alarmed to feel something rumbling below Budapest. Budapest proudly boasts the second-oldest metro in the world, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s been running continuously since 1896!
