AFS Intercultural Exchanges Hong Kong and the Asia Society Hong Kong Center are proud to announce the joint panel discussion “Developing Global Mindsets for Hong Kong’s Future”. A group of distinguished panelists will tackle issues such as youth development, intercultural learning and appreciation, education for students to cultivate interpersonal perspectives.

This event coincides with AFS Hong Kong’s 35th Anniversary and Asia Society Hong Kong Center’s program series on global education for Asia.

Program

Developing Global Mindsets for Hong Kong’s Future will tackle issues of youth employment, intercultural education, and personal development and address concerns such as:

How to better educate our students to cultivate international perspectives?
How to promote intercultural learning and appreciation?
How does Hong Kong develop our next generation talents?
How does Hong Kong maintain our competitiveness in tomorrow’s global world?

The program will start at 6:30 pm with drinks reception. The panel discussion starts at
7:00 pm and closes at 8:00 pm.

Moderator

Alejandro Reyes

Reyes is a visiting associate professor in the Department of Politics and Public Administration at the University of Hong Kong, teaching international relations and global studies. He is senior adviser to the US-Asia Institute in Washington, DC. After working as a journalist with the Time Inc. group, he became an independent global affairs consultant based in Hong Kong, working mainly with foundations and international organizations, including the G20, the Clinton Global Initiative and the World Economic Forum. In 2002, he served in Ottawa as a senior policy adviser to the Canadian foreign minister. Born in Manila, he was educated in the Philippines, the US and UK.

Speakers

Daniel Obst

Daniel Obst is the President, Chief Executive Officer and member of the AFS Board of Trustees of AFS Intercultural Programs. Formerly, he served as the Deputy Vice President for International Partnerships at the Institute of International Education (IIE) where he provided strategic leadership for many groundbreaking IIE initiatives. Obst graduated from the George Washington University, and London School of Economics. He currently serves on the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO.

Eric X. Li

Eric X. Li is founder and managing partner of Chengwei Capital and founder of Guanca.cn. He is on the Board of Directors of China Europe International Business School, Board of Trustees of Fudan University’s China Institute and the Vice Chairman of the Council of World Leading Schools Association. Li is a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies Council. He received his degrees from Berkeley, Stanford Business School and Fudan University.

Kuby Chan

Kuby Chan is the principal of the Jockey Club Ti-I College and Munsang College. She has a vast interdisciplinary education in geography, sociology & anthropology, and education management. She has also served an External Reviewer for secondary schools working on quality assurance and a member of the Assessment Panel on Curriculum Leadership, Chief Executive Award for Teaching Excellence.

Ming Wai Lau

Ming Wai Lau is the Chairman of Commission on Youth. He is also the Vice Chairman of the Bauhinia Foundation Research Centre, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Ocean Park Corporation, Council Member of City University of Hong Kong, and a member of Financial Infrastructure Sub-Committee of the Exchange Fund Advisory Committee. Mr. Lau holds degrees from King’s College London and the London School of Economics.

About AFS Intercultural Exchanges Hong Kong

AFS was founded in 1915 by the American Field Service, a volunteer ambulance corps during WWI and WWII. AFS volunteer ambulance drivers established the student exchange program as a means to broaden intercultural understanding with the goal of preventing war for future generations. Today AFS has a network of more than 60 partners in all over the world. AFS Hong Kong was set up in 1982 to provide local youth with complete and in-depth international cultural exchange opportunities, and to promote exchanges and learning regarding language, academic, daily life and culture, to enhance their quality as global citizens. Since 1982, AFS Hong Kong has been sending and hosting more than 4,300 to and from 30 countries.
