Position Summary

AFS International is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Coordinator of Engagement and Communications to help drive our communications strategy across platforms and initiatives.

The coordinator will live within our small but mighty communications team. They will work closely with a senior communications consultant and a graphic designer, reporting to the Deputy Chief of Organization Development. This role is ideal for a communications professional who enjoys copywriting, social media management, content creation, and has experience in, or an interest in learning the basics of digital advertising. The ideal candidate should be excited by the idea of meeting and working with people from different cultures, and enjoy coordinating diverse teams across time zones.

This is a full-time role suited for someone who thrives in an international nonprofit setting and is passionate about helping young people and supporting active global citizenship.

Key Responsibilities

  • Digital Content Creation & Support
    • Social Media Execution: Assist in the daily creation and scheduling of content and help with community management across platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube for AFS International and the AFS Youth Assembly.
    • Website Content Support: Help draft and update website content for our key sites using WordPress (AFS International, Youth Assembly), ensuring all information is accurate and clear.
    • Copywriting and Editing: Support the team by drafting announcements, editing press releases, and assisting with research and basic writing for high-level thought leadership articles and print publications (Annual Report, Janus).
    • Newsletter Production: Help design, write, and manage content for various external and internal newsletters (AFS Now, Global Up, Staff/Board updates) using Mailchimp and Pardot.
  • Communications Coordination & Organization
    • Content Calendar Management: Help organize and maintain the content calendars for both external publications and internal staff communications.
    • Logistical Support: Assist with the scheduling and logistical support for key internal events, including CEO Town Halls and Board Dialogue sessions.
    • Story Collection: Actively help discover and collect compelling stories and content from across the global AFS Network for use in external publications.
    • Training & Resources: Assist in preparing training materials and resources for AFS Network members on brand guidelines and external communications best practices.
  • Fundraising & Partner Outreach Support
    • Donor Communications: Help craft communications materials for individual donor newsletters and specialized fundraising campaigns.
    • Sponsorship Research: Conduct research on potential sponsors for the AFS Youth Assembly and assist with drafting basic email communications, presentations, and outreach materials.
  • Digital Advertising & Performance Tracking
    • Ad Campaign Assistance: Support the placement and daily monitoring of social media advertising campaigns for core programs (e.g., Youth Assembly, Global You Adventurer).
    • Data Monitoring: Assist in running regular reports and monitoring campaign performance using data analytics, helping the team draw insights and optimize results.
    • Industry Learning: Track and report on industry trends in non-profit marketing and advertising to inform team recommendations.

Required skills

  • 2+ years of communications experience, preferably in a not-for-profit organization, or other relevant/equivalent experience working on communications
  • Excellent English writing skills; Must be fluent (Can converse like a native speaker, with a high level of comfort and ease) and enjoy writing, as well as helping other people edit and improve their writing
  • Experience using the following platforms: Mailchimp, Canva, Google suite tools (gmail, docs, sheets, slides), Google analytics
  • Social media and community management experience on Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook, Youtube
  • Basic experience with design and the basic principles of good graphic design; Experience following established brand guidelines/using standard brand templates preferred

Preferred skills

  • Experience using Pardot, Salesforce, Adobe InDesign or Illustrator
