Katalin Tóthné Tímár first encountered AFS in 1997 in Debrecen, where she became a pivotal force in establishing one of Hungary’s strongest AFS chapters. As a preschool teacher and later a principal, Katalin had a vision of opening new horizons for young people and fostering a culture of volunteerism in Hungary’s post-communist society. Driven by her dedication, she inspired colleagues and students to join this new journey, quickly building a community dedicated to AFS’s mission.
Her two sons, both of whom participated in exchanges, further solidified her family’s commitment to intercultural exchange. Katalin’s leadership saw Debrecen become the third-strongest AFS chapter in Hungary, with a robust network of volunteers and a steady stream of hosting and sending students. Over her 27 years of service, she has personally supported the journeys of around 350 Hungarian students who went abroad and hosted over 400 incoming students, shaping hundreds of lives.
Katalin’s commitment goes beyond just the numbers. She has continuously advocated for students from all backgrounds, helping many to overcome challenges and even securing scholarships to enable their participation. Her impact is deeply felt in her community, where former students and colleagues alike recognize her as a role model. Katalin’s enduring passion and her ability to foster an environment of acceptance and growth truly embody the AFS values.
Katalin’s family has also been an anchor in her AFS journey. Alongside her husband, Imre, who served on the AFS Board and supported orientations and events, they have hosted three full-time students and welcomed countless others for shorter stays. Katalin’s dedication and her ability to connect with others make her an extraordinary leader within AFS Hungary. Her journey is a testament to her belief in the power of intercultural exchange and volunteerism to transform lives.
“In the last 27 years Katalin has achieved all the missions that are our flagships: hosting, sending, volunteering and school relations. This sentence would be too plastic, but you, who read this, as a real AFSer might know how much effort and extra commitment it takes to do so.” —Petra Tisóczki, Volunteer, AFS Hungary
