Fifty diverse students from Aberdeen, Teesside, and South Wales have been granted scholarships to participate in the AFS Global STEM Innovators: a six-week intercultural exchange program, funded by bp, for high school youth to foster curiosity in the STEM fields, and to develop the interpersonal and cultural skills needed to help the world transition to a more sustainable future.

After finishing the virtual exchange program, focused on enhancing global competence skills and investigating the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the scholars are now together in person to deepen their intercultural exchange, meet with STEM industry leaders and experts, participate in interactive site visits, gain volunteer service experience, and investigate case studies in sustainable energy and technologies. The 2024 AFS Global STEM UK Innovators Workshop is currently taking place in Aberdeen, Scotland and scholars will then travel to Teesside, England.

AFS Intercultural Programs, a global non-profit educational exchange organisation, is proud to run the second year of the Global STEM Innovators program in the United Kingdom, following a successful launch in South Wales in 2023, and to expand the program to Aberdeen and Teesside in 2024.

Full scholarship funding is provided by bp, which supports AFS Global STEM programs to help build the STEM talent that the world needs to create sustainable solutions, and to improve the diversity of talent in the STEM fields. AFS International and Celtic English Academy/AFS Wales partner to administer the program locally.

Upon program completion, scholars earn the award-winning AFS Global Competence Certificate and are invited to join the AFS Global STEM alumni community, which offers mentorship, networking, and further academic and professional development opportunities.

AFS brings decades of expertise in impact-driven educational exchange and the power of a global network. “We know that young people are eager to innovate and bring positive change to their communities, and we are proud to empower young people with critical global skills and knowledge, like cross-cultural communication, empathy, and conflict resolution,” says Daniel Obst, President & CEO of AFS. “Educating more young people to become global citizens is crucial to create a more sustainable future.”
