his program will explore topics related to the conservation of this critical natural resource.

A second theme of the program is related to social action. Students engage with Native American, African-American, and Latino community groups while learning about specific challenges faced by these communities. Participants have an opportunity to engage with peers, participate in sports activities, learn about their lives, and how community-based organizations are helping to make a difference.

The third component of the program is fun & music and includes joining SummerFest, the largest music festival in the world! It also includes time at the beach, and so much more.

The fourth component is the host family and the 4th of July celebration. Students will stay with host families to participate in the festivities – parades and fireworks – and to learn about US home life. The host family stay is 5 days of the program, with the remaining time spent in a university dorm.

Returning Home

“Life-changing” is hard to describe, yet it’s nearly always the first thing that AFSers say when asked about their experience abroad. “Transformed” is another one. When you return home, if you’re like most AFSers, you’ll bring with you a sense of accomplishment unlike any other. You’ll have gained maturity and independence, discovered new passions, and feel like you can do anything you set your mind to. That transformation isn’t visible only to you, though – others see it as well. AFSers gain critical skills for college and careers, ranging from language fluency to intercultural competence and critical reasoning. “Life-changing” means it’s only the beginning.
